Challenger and Education Proponent Upsets Favorite For Virginia's Governorship

November 04, 2021 2:42 PM | Kenneth Poppe (Administrator)

On November 2nd, challenger Glenn Youngkin defeated favorite Terry McAuliffe to become the new Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Also, voters elected running mate and former US Marine Winsome Sears as Lieutenant Governor, and turned the Legislature over to the Youngkin/Sears party for the first time since 2009.

This should be of special interest to educators because one of Youngkin's biggest campaign themes was to de-politicize education, and to repudiate many of the views about public school reform promulgated by teacher unions.  With mid-term elections about one year away, this could be a national bell-weather movement to return the focus on education to where it belongs ... to classroom teachers and their students.

ITT stands with governors like Glenn Youngkin and our own Texas Governor Greg Abbott, because they align well with our views on several "Hot Issues" facing education.  https://www.ittexas.org/HOT-ISSUES
